Organic Intelligence that outlived Artificial
The water geyser in one of our bathrooms had stopped giving hot water. Calling a plumber for a petty job was an expensive affair, and this had been my belief for several years. Following an argument with Priya about the delay in getting the issue fixed, I decided to solve the matter on my own organic intelligence.
“I will fix this today,” I proclaimed.
I remembered that the geyser connection in this bathroom was different from those of the other bathrooms in the house due to the fact that it had an inlet from the solar panels for the hot water provisioning. The geyser that was installed was a backup measure.“The switch seems to be broken,” I said after carefully inspecting what was blocking the flow towards the hot water mixer. The next morning, I visited the hardware shop and got a replacement. I carefully interrogated the shopkeeper, ensuring its size and appropriateness. It was not a perfect fit but was able to perform the switching job.
Alas! The hot water flow wasn’t established even after replacing the switch. This was not a failure. You aren’t lost until you accept, I thought. I was in no mood to call the plumber. I had taken up the challenge myself, and Priya was aware of it now. It was a situation to safeguard my dignity and prestige in the eyes of my wife. But I was stuck.
“I do not have the necessary tools to open up the nozzle,” I declared, and used this as an excuse to invite the plumber. Priya looked at me without an expression as she recollected the bad fight we had, arguing over the delay in getting the problem fixed. I booked an appointment with a plumber from Urban Company.
“4:00 PM is the time we will get this fixed,” I informed her. Priya wasn’t really happy with everything I was doing to get it fixed. She had been bathing using cold water for several days now, trying to not use the geysers to save on the electricity bills.
The plumber arrived and inspected the situation. He used his professional tools to open up the angle cock and quickly concluded that it was jammed, which blocked the hot water flow even after the switch was turned on.
“I can get it replaced. Give me 15 minutes and I will get you a replacement,” said the plumber.
“No, it’s okay! I can get it replaced myself. I just wanted your expertise to troubleshoot,” I said. I made the payment to him and he left.
The switch wasn’t the real problem. It was the blocked angle cock. I went back to the hardware shop and got the faulty part replaced. I did it on my own. Did I really? Somewhere within my heart, I felt a vacuum—an emptiness of non-accomplishment. Lost in my own thoughts, I bought a Bosch DIY toolkit to fix the issue next time it would occur—unsure of what challenge may arise in the near future. Now I owned the toolkit but still lacked the experience and skills of the plumber.
“It’s fixed!” I shouted from the bathroom, declaring victory as I tested the functionality and got my hand burned by the hot water. Priya didn’t react. I realized that the time to rejoice over being successful was long passed, after spending days to get the problem fixed.
Why We Never Buy a Green Tooth-brush?
It all began when my wife, Priya, decided to revolutionize our dental lives. She brought home a set of four sparkling new toothbrushes—each with its own identity. A red one, a white one, a blue one, and the most remarkable of them all: a vibrant green brush that almost glowed with pride.
“This way, no confusion,” she declared. “Everyone gets their own brush!”
Sarthak, our 7-year-old speedster, instantly pounced on the red one. Red is his favourite world. Priya kept the elegant white. I, obviously, took the majestic green, which left blue for Shamika, our ever-observant daughter.
For the first few days, mornings were smooth. Sarthak and Shamika brushed up early and marched off to school. I, starting office a little later, would bask in the joy of my new green brush. There's something oddly satisfying about using a brand-new toothbrush. Sometimes I feel attached to this materialistic world.
But as days turned into weeks, and weeks into six whole months, something odd happened.
My green brush… aged. Badly. The bristles looked like they had been through a sandstorm. They were tired. So was I. I started dreaming of a fresh toothbrush. But in our household, ordering brushes is Priya's department—unofficially official.
One morning, Priya reviewed the dental lineup. “Why is the green one so worn out?” she asked.
That’s when I paused. The green brush was always oddly wet. Even when I was the first to reach it.
“Why is my brush always damp in the morning?” I mumbled, as a tiny bell rang in my head.
I did what any responsible adult would do in such a situation—I called an urgent family meeting.
“Papa…” Shamika yelled before I could even open the case. “That’s MY green brush!”
“What?! That’s mine! I’ve been using it for six months!” I said, shocked and slightly betrayed.
“Noooo!” she screamed in horror, her face twisted in ultimate disgust.
She made a dramatic fake vomiting sound, just for effect. We both stared at each other, horror-struck. Six months. Same brush. Two people.
“Well,” I tried to recover, “done is done.” No point digging into emotional cavities now.
Without a second thought, I walked up to the bin, saluted the poor green brush—who had unknowingly worked double shifts all this time—and chucked it.
Shamika was still glaring at me like I had just licked her ice cream.
“Why don’t you start using the blue one now?” I offered, trying to lighten the moment. “No one ever used it.”
“Errrhhh…” she grunted in peak teenage disgust, while I burst into uncontrollable laughter.
And thats how a green toothbrush united (and divided) a father and daughter. Moral of the story? Label your brushes. But since then, we have stopped using green tooth brushes.
Gifted Kids of the Perfectionist Moms
"Mom, Can I have a glass of water please?", Joel asked as he took off his head from the solution his Mom was trying to explain him.
She looked back at her son in dismay. She was able to feel his inattentiveness and was feeling really bad about it. He studied his mother's expressions and then recollected the thrash of the wooden scale he had in his back an hour back. Just to avoid annoying her mother again, Joel was unable to stick to his question any further.
"Sorry Mom, I don't need water", Joel said as he immediately hooked up his head down into the book.
"Look Son, it's your Mathematics paper tomorrow - the one in which you are very weak in. You had a glass of water just twenty minutes back when you got up for a pee. Do you feel that I am doing all this for me?", she asked.
"But I am really thirsty this time Mom!", Joel exclaimed.
"This time? What do you mean by this time? Weren't you thirsty last time?", the mother was almost furious now. Little Joel realized the mistake he had committed by uttering the last sentence.
"I am ruining my holiday here just to get you prepared for your examination and you are finding ways to waste your time?", she almost burst out loud.
"It's not that Mom!", Joel said as he tried to calm down her furious mother.
"Shut up Joel! It was just because of your this attitude that you were ranked Second in the last Semester examination. I don't want to give your father a second chance to blame me for the mistakes you commit. Am I making it very clear now?", she asked.
"But I am done with HCF and LCM Mom...", Joel said as he tried to clarify his side.
"Now, Will you please stop arguing and complete the section B of this model question paper until I return from the kitchen?", she seemed adamant. Poor Joel had no other option than to continue with the piece of work his mother had assigned to him.
It was six in the evening when little Joel finished his job. It was just then he could hear the yells of the neighboring kids playing his favorite ball game. Realizing that he was alone in the room, he decided to have a peek off the window curtain. It was Sunil who was playing the goal keeper, he noticed. He wished he could join them but all he lacked was the guts to ask for a permission. Poor Joel kept on watching them, playing the game until he was caught by his Mom.
"You won't mind letting your parents down Joel, would you?", asked his frustrated Mom.
"Mumma, Look Sunil's playing downstairs too. Can I play with them just for an hour please?", Joel pleaded.
"Today, no way Joel. How can you forget that you were ranked Second last examination just due to a couple of marks lesser than Sunil? This time is priceless dear and I am sure that you would never want to loose it", she said as she tried to calm her temper down and handed a glass of warm milk to him.
Joel wasn't happy about it. He emptied the glass till the last drop. He gave the glass back to his Mom as he found his way back to the study table. He continued his study exercises for a few more hours until he was called off by his Dad for dinner.
Minutes later, the trio was fast asleep.
It was a bright sunny evening the next day when the school bus dropped Joel home. His mother was waiting for his arrival impatiently. As the door bell rang, she opened the door hastily and with a crave to read her son's expressions.
Joel entered straight inside the drawing room without taking out a moment of his time to look at her mother.
"How was your paper Joel?", she asked impatiently.
Joel looked back at her in disgust. "Not bad Mom; but it would have been better if we would have followed the examination timetable", Joel shrugged.
"What do you mean by that?", she asked with a puzzled look.
"It was the Computer theory and not Mathematics examination today Mom", he said as he banged his bag on the table and entered the kitchen for a glass of water. She watched him emptying one glass after the other as she stood right there, transfixed and spellbound.
A Pee-er Review!
'Perfectionists' are the ones who are just and focused on the given task, in search of high standards in every feat they accomplish. Nothing could diverge them from their intentions to visit the place. They take care that not even a single drop is spilled outside the bowl. They come in straight and walk steadily towards the stall. And then, Just Go for it - Aim and Shoot. Washes his hands clean and leaves the room immediately.A 'confused' pee-er saunters inside, wondering all the time what under the sun has made him feel visit a restroom. He takes a look around his fellow co-pee-ers and takes ample time to judge his bladdery movements. Realizes that it is worth taking a chance and stands in front of a stall. He feels disgusted when he realizes that there ain't anything to be waiting for. Quits.
The 'Curious' kind is much interested on how their neighbors do it. Try to peek from the wall and enjoys the way you do it. You might feel shy and would try to hide yourself from his uninvited stares. He would then try to steal back his stare to find someone over the other side. Do not always mistake them to be homosexuals, these are rather among the curious breed of Pee-ers. Rare enough! :)
The most boring kinds are the most 'punctual' ones. He realizes that it is the time for an afternoon pee-break, walks steadily in the restroom, looks at the minute hand of his wrist watch, notes it down in the mind. Unzips, pushes the boxer down with the left hand, and grabs the little man with the right - forces his bladder to finishes the task just in time. Not bothered much about the spillage. Wipes his hands and leaves.
A 'kiddish' pee-er takes almost half the time in unzipping his pants, sometimes brings it down halfway. After many efforts, he is successful and feels very happy about his accomplishment. He takes his own time to have a look around the side walls. Suddenly, he realizes that he missed the shot. Holds back his breath for a while and tries to concentrate. He loves the sound of the fluid getting accumulated in the pot. He keeps enjoying it until the time he realizes that he may finish soon. He then moves back and forth; left and right, making circles into the water and continues the game until he notices that he has victimized one of this shoes.
Desperate! Well, GO!! GO!! GO!! I believe that they do not fall under the reserved category. Basically, they can originate from any of the categories mentioned here. They have only one thing in their minds - to get rid of their pain. They are ready to reject heaven for the want of peeing. Nothing in the world is more relaxing.
Doubtlessly, my favorites are the 'creative' pee-ers. He looks for innovative ideas every time he visits the restroom. To discuss about all his ways would form a different story, hence let's not discuss it here. He finishes his task gracefully and looks up at the wall. He hates it clean. Takes out his ink and writes a beautiful slogan - the one he just thought of during his stint. The most intense ones among this breed are expert painters and cartoonists. They really make the place entertaining.
'Music Buffs' do not really need a description. Rather, their song describes them well. Essentially, they are not very good singers, but they enjoy humming, whistling and singing all the time unlike a 'moron' who takes off his fly, looks straight up at the ceiling, and pees on the neighbor’s foot. Ahh! That’s disgusting, my shoe!
I think, almost all of the personalities of the people could be read in a restroom. I would like to restrict my explanation to only these personalities lest my imagination would turn wilder, so much so that I would gain some second thoughts before I could post this article on my blog. But I would like to disclaim that personalities and work performances are two separate things and have no interconnections within. Further, I am still researching on the resemblance of a person's behavior in a restroom with his natural personality. So just keep this in mind the next time you meet me in the restroom - you are a subject of research.
Once when I was Jobless!

This is one of the memorable incidents in my life; kinda experimental and could be hilarious for the reader.
Those were the days when we were just out of our engineering college still not hired by any of the companies in the job market. For me especially, it was a matter of great embarrassment rather than disappointment to be recognized as just another guy searching for a job and needless to say I was trying very badly to get something to work with. I had grown a huge network of friends by the time I was out from the engineering studies. I was never unknown of any of the recruitment drives that were happening in and around Mumbai and with me were two of my close friends Jicks and Shailesh. We all contacted each other informing about any of the recruitment drives happening in the city.
Internet and newspapers were the prime resources of information for all of us. All we wanted was a job and only a job regardless of the remuneration or work profile.
‘Heck!! We all are engineers yet jobless!’ We thought all the day. Despite having good academic record and educational background all we were were jobless! We started feeling paltry when none of us succeeded in this mission.
One such day, my phone rang. It was Jicks. He seemed to have another news of recruitment ad.
‘Have you read this Neeraj?’ he asked interestingly.
‘Read! Read what?’ I asked
‘About this classified recruitment ad for management trainees at lower parel? They want BEs and MBAs and above all freshers are invited. What say dude?’
That sounded interesting. An opportunity for another attempt or who knows this could be the purpose for which I was born. With no second thoughts I said ‘Okay’ and called Shailesh the very next moment. We called up the number that was printed in the classified soon to be responded by a soft feminine voice that told us to come tomorrow morning along with our CV for an initial interview.
Interviews were no new thing for all of us because we had attended a dozens of them since then. All we wanted was a job that could give us some recognition, a reason to breathe and eat.
The next morning me, Jicks and Shailesh reached the destination and were directed to a small office in a moderately old building. We were greeted by a girl who introduced herself as Tina, the assistant manager of the company. She collected out resumes, marked some circles on it the reason of which is still unclear to me even today.
‘Wait for 10 minutes and I shall get back to you.’ and Tina asked us to wait outside the cabin. We could see her talking to someone over the phone through the glass door. After a few minutes she came out of her cube and asked us to go downstairs to meet the Manager for a small interview. So we went downstairs to meet the manager. To our amazement, the manager was a beautiful lady hardly in her late twenties. Shailesh became kinda nervous when he saw her and his eyes were as if depicting ‘How the hell am I gonna talk to this lady. Am spellbound!’
She was a serious lady and seemed very pragmatic in her actions and language.
‘Are you three friends?’ she asked us
‘Yeah!’ we burst out in chorus and that could be the reason she interviewed us simultaneously. She asked us all those usual interview questions and we sincerely gave our usual answers.
‘Well!’ she said after the interview, ‘Can I see you all for a test tomorrow morning. The test could last the whole day and please make sure you abide with the dress code. Wear a tie when you come! Okay?’
We nodded.
‘What is the test about? How should we prepare for it?’ I asked while leaving. But she refused to tell anything about it.
‘That’s a surprise. You will get to know it tomorrow’ and that was the only response that we received.
That evening we spent our time guessing what would be the test about and what would be the outcome. We thought about Tina and the lady who took our interview. We had our fingers crossed and were praying desperately to get selected.
The next morning I wore my lucky shirt which had proved unlucky till now and reached the same office with Jicks and Shailesh. The environment of the office seemed very different today. There was a loudspeaker that was playing some hindi numbers. We started wondering whether we had reached the same place or not and were relieved when we saw Tina. She gave us a friendly smile and went back to her work. We were still not sure what the company was all about. There were many people sitting in the hall outside Tina’s cabin who seemed to be just other candidates like us.
‘Competitors!’ we thought in our mind.
It was 7:30 AM when we reached there and were told to wait. An hour passed by but we were still unattended. I started a conversation with one of the candidates. My heart sank when I learnt that he was an engineer with a MBA degree. Probably, there were many others with similar qualifications.
The loudspeaker was gradually deafening my ears and sitting on the hard chair was turning me on. By the time I had scanned all the newspapers that were lying before me on the small table. It was 9:45 AM now and suddenly the music stopped and there came a man with a pleasing smile. Following him were some more people who seemed to be professionals of some sort.
‘Good Morning friends!’, the man greeted us as he introduced himself to be working for 4 years with the company. He boasted to have acquired a good deal of experience in oral communications and salesmanship. And today he was a great asset for his company. We literally bit our fingers when he told us that he was just 12th grade passed. He believed that educational qualifications are not of much importance for the candidates they are looking for. That increased my anxiety and the mystery in my mind. I was able to see the enthusiasm on Jicks’s and Shailesh’s faces.
After that long speech, he told us that we need to travel to some place right now. That looked like some fun yet mysterious. Then he started calling the candidates in batches of two in a separate room, introduced them to a couple of people after which they left from the hall. It was Shailesh’s turn now. Keeping his fingers crossed he followed the man into the room where he was introduced to an elderly lady. After few minutes, Shailesh came out of the room with the lady, totally confused of what was happening to him. Speaking no word to me and Jicks, he left the hall with the lady.
Next were me and Jicks. In the room the man introduced us to two girls approximately of our ages. To be more frank, Jicks was introduced to a beautiful girl named Clara and myself to a girl named Sheela. Jicks and me looked at each other’s faces and pondered, then smiled as if we are going to have girlfriends! But to our dismay we were told that they would be our trainers as well as judges for the test that would be conducted today.
Just as the other folks, we came out of the room following Clara and Sheela. We came out of the building and Clara asked us if we had our breakfast as they were going to take us to Marine Lines. We nodded and started walking towards the railway station. On the way we gave them a brief introduction of ourselves and so did they. We could see people staring at beautiful Clara and then to us as we walked down the street. There were several questions haunting our mind now. I tried to ask Clara about the details of the test but she said that it was a surprise.
‘How long will it take?’ Jicks asked
‘I suppose you must be told that it would take a day for the test.’ Sheela replied with a compassionate smile.
That reply made us silent for a few moments. Sheela bought us the tickets and we boarded a train towards Churchgate. Soon we reached Marine Lines. By the time it was noon and Clara suggested that we would have an early lunch before we proceed.
‘Don’t worry guys! I shall pay the bill!’ she said and drove us in a decent restaurant. After the lunch we walked down the streets for almost half an hour to reach Xaveri bazaar which is well known for jewelry shops in Mumbai. And there started our test.
Clara said that she would be taking us to as many shops as possible till 4:00 PM and all we need to do is to see them talk to shopkeepers in selling some privilege card that offered them some discounts.
‘And after 4:00 PM?’ I asked.
‘Then you would imitate us!’ Sheela said.
Now we were getting the clear picture of the job profile. But we wanted to know more and so followed these gals to some shops. We saw some shopkeepers droving us out of their shops, some listening calmly to the explanation and some merely admiring our girls! Three hours passed by and we were fed up of all the thing.
‘This isn’t my job!’ I thought in my mind.
‘Neeraj, no matter what you would think about me but I want to sneak away from this. Right now! I can’t bear this any longer!’ Jicks told me
I smiled back to him as if conveying that you just stole my words. We decided to call Shailesh before and we learnt that the lady had taken him to a market place in Sion. We told him that we are leaving the job as if we had it. Shailesh wanted the same.
‘We don’t want to give this test Clara! We want to be technical guys. This is not for us!’ we said. The girls made several futile attempts to make us stay but we were adamant on our thoughts.
‘Sorry! And thanks for the lunch!’, I said and we left.
When we reached home we wanted to laugh at Shailesh cos’ he seemed to be in a more pathetic situation with the old lady and me and Jicks had the reason to boast for roaming with two beautiful girls on the streets of Mumbai.
It's a dog's life!
http://shindeneeraj.blogspot.com
We humans always look down at these quadrupeds often by commenting “It’s a dog’s life” and “a dog’s death”. Known for their faithfulness these creatures are free from all the social forces and the so called shame. Certainly I cannot look down to them when I think of sex!
I woke up today morning and stood at the window pane glaring at the things on the other end. Another pleasant day with lots of things to do. The birds were chirping as usual, the city buses were busy again, people rushing towards there offices, children toddling towards their schools and the wind continued to scare little butterflies. Just the very next moment my eyes struck up with this couple deeply engaged in sex. But my center of interest was not in their act but to the reactions of the passer-bys. Of course I was concerned about the two as well. She looked younger than him with a well toned feminine figure enough to arouse any of the males of her species. And this lucky chap seemed so lucky to have her.
Just then passed a bike, a lad with his two little chicks on the rear seat. Interestingly, the man saw this couple in the intimate act and drove his bike with a 60 speed from 20 in not more than 3 seconds! It was a crowded street and people kept on moving steadily. There were even some of them who didn’t even bother what was going on. On the contrary some were so much bothered about them that they stopped and stared. A few smiled, a few frowned while a few pretended to be ignorant about it. But my hero here was not concerned of the world and neither was the heroine! So free, unrestricted, no bounds at all. They didn’t know what they were doing but they wanted to do it. Many a times, it seemed that this couple would be disturbed by the passing buses and trucks. But this morning they were in their high spirits and trying to convey the world that we don’t care a damn for you. And that’s what I call playful! Playful sex.
Can humans ever be so free! And that was the very next thought that tickled my mind. It’s not just about sex but do we enjoy the freedom as animals do? We love to be free but like to be within our bounds. We like to enjoy the beautiful things in life but we need to abide with all those limits. Just that we are humans! Civilized!
“The geyser’s on Neeraj!”
I heard my roommate screaming from within and discovered that I was getting late for work. I wished to see the climax just with the same anxiety as I would've when I watch the climax of a good movie. And how can I miss the climax! And that was the end of a great play – sex that was so free, so playful. Wonder if humans could do the same with such an ease and freedom. The ultimate answer I find is ‘No’ just when I recall the face of my nerdy neighbour who has four daughters and still desirous of a baby-boy!
